Patient is a 23 year old female. She has had a space between her upper central incisors (midline diastema) since childhood development. She did not like this appearance. The space was closed with composite filling material bonded to existing tooth structure. No pre-existing tooth structure was removed. The procedure took approximately ½ hour and no anesthesia was necessary. The patient was very pleased with the new appearance of her smile. Because composite is softer and more porous than tooth structure, bonding may have to be renewed or replaced periodically. More permanent restoration can be accomplished with the use of veneers or crowns. However these procedures involve some tooth reduction and laboratory fabrication, which requires a second visit for insertion.
